Net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide on hayland with drained peat soil in central European Russia: mowing scenario analysis

Haylands are the mildest option for agricultural use of drained peatlands in terms CO2 emissions. However, fluxes and their balance may depend on various conditions including frequency mowing amount phytomass removed. Based field measurements using chamber method monitoring environmental factors conducted 2018–2020 hayland fallow peatland central European Russia, a mathematical model was built. Numerical experiments showed that hayland, irrespective intensity, did not lead to an increase emissions compared fallow. Fallow after single had closely modelled net ecosystem exchange (NEE) values: 9.9 ± 2.4 8.5 2.7 t C ha−1 season−1, respectively. Furthermore, turned out 2.8 hay (0.8 0.1 ha−1), 4.4 (1.4 0.1) double mowing. The NEE increased 9.4 2.9 season−1. A session early summer is recommended. Compared other uses, e.g. arable land, compromise between reducing gaining economic benefits from peatlands.
